Why 23.5°?
Did you know that if the Earth wasn’t tilted at 23.5°, we wouldn’t have any seasons?
Can you imagine a world without the rhythm of spring, summer, autumn and winter? The natural world thrives on seasonal changes and so do we. We use them to measure our lives, both literally and figuratively. Let’s bring out Shakespeare, shall we?
And after summer evermore succeeds
Barren winter, with his wrathful nipping cold:
So cares and joys abound, as seasons fleet.
(Henry VI, Part 2)
Those 23.5° are important: they shape life as we know it and provide it with a comforting rhythm of change.
So, here I am: a Christian, story-consumer and story-creator. Like everyone else living at 23.5°, I’m figuring things out as I go: faith, story-telling, how to recover from post-covid syndrome… whether I can eventually persuade my landlord to let me have a cat.
That’s pretty much what this is: me, writing fiction and figuring my way through the seasons of life. If you decide to join me then hopefully we can figure out a few things together.
Warning: there will be cats, gushing over anime, some Bible stuff and references to nerd-culture.
THE FICTION
Mostly, my fiction genre is speculative (fantasy, dystopian, sci-fi) but I dabble in other genres too.
Currently, I’m publishing my first fiction serial, a speculative romance called The Hanahaki Club (click on the link to find out more). It’s a bit of an experiment for me, both in genre and form, but I’m excited for the adventure ahead and hope I can have some fun with my readers along the way. If you choose to subscribe you’ll get each new episode delivered to your inbox every week.
I’ve also self-published a young adult dystopian trilogy, The Divinity Laws, which you can find in the relevant section on my homepage.
I’ve also written two further adult novels: I’m sitting on one for now but the other, THE DYING FALL—a speculative, dystopian novel—I’ve just finished publishing here. To check it out, just visit The Dying Fall section.
The first chapter of The Dying Fall and the first two episodes of The Hanahaki Club were featured in Top in Fiction (if you’re looking for some excellent fiction to read here on Substack, from micro-fiction to serials, I recommend subscribing to Top in Fiction). I got some medallions!
Every piece I publish here is FREE, but if you enjoy what you read and want to leave something in the tip jar—to fund my tea addiction and keep me supplied with cheap notebooks and pens—you can donate here: Buy Me a Cuppa
